ALTERNATIVE TEACHING: Sometimes students benefit from the preteaching or reteaching of instructional content. One teacher works with a small group of students to preteach or reteach while the other instructs the large group. This format can also be used to ensure that all students in a class receive opportunities to interact with the teacher in a small group. Alternative teaching is useful when students' skill levels vary widely or when some students are working on a modified objective.
Caution: The greatest risk in this format is stigmatizing students with disabilities by repeatedly grouping them together. This can be avoided by varying the purpose for grouping, including grouping for enrichment, and ensuring that alternative groups are fluid.
